Warhawks Win in National History Day Competition

Many of the McDonough Middle School 7th graders competed in the regional National History Day Competition on March 8 and several earned awards.

The National History Day competition has been an event for more than 50 years. This year's theme for projects is "Rights and Responsibilities in History." The goal of the competition is

"Studying the past to inform the present and shape the future."

Junior Group Website winner & state qualifier: Dayten Reed & Caleb Hassan for their project “Mahatma Gandhi and the Salt March”

Junior Individual Exhibit Honorable Mention 1st runner up: Allana Pham for their project “The Anti-Apartheid Movement and the Civil Rights Movement: The Fight for Racial Injustice”

Social Studies teacher, Jennifer Dunn, encouraged all of her students to participate at the school level because it is a great way for them to build their reputations in the district and make connections across the state. Throughout the process (which began in late August 2024), students learned how to conduct academic research, write annotated bibliographies, and use primary sources. "Students who participate in NHD have shown growth in both reading and writing skills," Dunn said.

The state competition will be held on April 26th at LaGrange College.
