Don't Let the "Summer Slide" Slip You Up!

Don't Let the "Summer Slide" Slip You Up!

As we approach the end of the school year and head into summer break, it's time for some well-deserved relaxation. Summer is also the prime season for the "summer slide"--- the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year.

Keeping young brains active over the break ensures they start next school year ahead of the curve rather than catching up.

Did you know?

  • The Cumulative Effect: On average, students lose about two months of reading skills over the summer break.
  • The Achievement Gap: This learning loss can be cumulative; by the end of middle school, summer learning loss accounts for significant portions of the achievement gap in reading.
  • The 2-Hour Rule: It doesn't take much to prevent the summer slide. Just 2 to 3 hours of learning activity per week (20 to 30 minutes a day) is enough to prevent significant learning loss.

We want all of our Warhawks to return in August feeling confident and ready. Check out the curated list of summer reading logs, digital libraries, and interactive math challenges to engage young minds: /fs/pages/16510
